On 18 Sep 2021, a Cambridge alumnus, now research engineer based in Cambridge, was assaulted by a group of teens last Saturday at a Co-Op on Mill Road. He was checking out items on the shelf when he felt his ear pulled by one of 10+ teenagers standing behind him. As he turned around, he was faced by a string of racist remarks and comments like “chink” and “go back to your home country” and was pushed by them. As he was trying to argue and defend himself, everyone started hitting him, and after a while they ran away. He tried to chase the teenagers but couldn’t catch them in time. That night, he caught a fever and a CT scan at the hospital showed a fractured nose and multiple cartilage damages.
The attackers have not been found yet, and this is not the first time Asian hate crimes happen in Cambridge. Let us put a stop to it.
Update: another Chinese man was harrassed on Mill Road on 25 Sept, exactly one week from the last incident, and from available footages, the attackers were identified as the same group of teens during the Co-Op assault. It was said that the same group of teens might have been seen tearing down flags in a recent anti-racism protest in Cambridge as well. The community is acting on it including reporting to the police and gathering evidence. Meanwhile, please stay vigilant when you are around the area, seek support from nearby store owners immediately if you sense danger, and report to the police if you see any suspects. Update 2: This is beyond outrageous. Call the police IMMEDIATELY if you see this group of people. The screenshots are not the only incidents we have received reports about today (25 Sept) on Mill Road! These responses will be shown on the top so that we know how many were harassed by them and can pressure the police to do more, before this continues even further!
Update 3: The same group of teens started harrasing women and children of non-Asian races. This just goes to show how letting these people at large will affect everyone eventually. Update 4: We are excited to say that 3 suspects have been arrested by the police! There are still a few out there at large but hopefully they will be caught soon. News link below.
